Community Foundation Awards $690,000

By the end of 2008, the Community Foundation of Delaware County awarded more than $690,000 throughout the county in grants and scholarships—the largest amount in the Foundation’s history.

 “It’s nice to share some good news in these difficult economic times,” says Marlene Casini, the Foundation’s President.

“While the Foundation is often known for college scholarships, other types of funds at the Foundation enable us to support the good work of our nonprofit organizations,” adds Casini.   “These volunteer-driven organizations provide much needed services to those less fortunate or enrich our lives through education and culture.”

      A grant to People In Need, Inc. (PIN) was made for emergency dental assistance.  “Those served are based on the amount of funding available,” noted Kevin Crowley, PIN, executive director.  “We use all the funds available in this program,” continues Crowley.  Last year 43 adults and 2 children were helped along with the services a many dentists in the area.

      On receiving their grant for the Arts Castle, executive director Kevin Greenwood replied, “This grant will provide an opportunity for deserving students to take part in the creative experiences we offer. In these difficult economic times, students might otherwise be unable to participate if it weren’t for the financial assistance.”

The Delaware Speech and Hearing Center will be able to provide myofunctional therapy in our community as a result of their grant.  Myofunctional therapy is used to treat children and adults with muscle weakness and incorrect positioning of the tongue, teeth and lips.  This contributes to difficulty feeding, swallowing, and speaking clearly.

Commenting on the significance of their grant, Guy Naples, Center executive director says, “Previously, there were no therapists trained in this type of therapy at the Center. “Now, we will be able to provide this therapy to our patients in all three Delaware Speech and Hearing Center locations,” said Naples.

Grants from the Community Foundation were also made to:

Asbury United Methodist Church;

Canine Companions

Central Ohio Symphony

Chamber Music Connection;

Community Action Organization of Delaware, Madison and Union Counties

Delaware City School District

Delaware County Bicentennial Commission

Delaware County Library District

Honor Flight Network

Lewis Center United Methodist Church

Liberty Community Center

Literacy Coalition of Delaware County

Methodist Theological School of Ohio

Olentangy Education Foundation

Ohio Wildlife Center

ParentGrief, Inc., and

Preservation Parks of Delaware County.

That brings the total given back to the community to more than $3.6 million since the Foundation was created 13 years ago.  The increase in grants awarded is a result of donors who create charitable funds at the Foundation, bequests, contributions and investments.

      This year’s scholarships were awarded to college students from Delaware County including 90 scholarships for more than $180,000 from the Ralph and Mabel Gooding Scholarship Fund.  Scholarships were also awarded from the Edith W. Hewitt Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Manos Family Scholarship Fund, the Weiler Family NorthStar Scholarship Fund, and the Donald F. and Ruby A. Westbrook Scholarship Fund.

The Foundation’s goal is to build the community endowment that will provide for community needs now and in the future.

The Community Foundation of Delaware County encourages and enables donors to achieve philanthropic goals that leave a lasting legacy.
